Posted on Wednesday August 24, 2016

Waterloo Region – The Immigration Partnership Council is pleased to announce two new grants to agencies supporting Syrian newcomers. New grants totaling $36,763 under the Immigration Partnership Fund for Syrian Newcomers were approved in July, bringing total grant-making to $445,733. New grants include:

  • $14,463 to the KW Multicultural Centre to enable settlement agencies and others working with refugees prevent domestic violence and inform Syrian refugees how to identify and help women at risk of abuse.
  • $22,300 to SHORE Centre to provide sexual health programs for Syrian newcomer women and develop a pilot program for Syrian men.

“The projects supported in this round of funding proactively address sensitive and important issues,” said Peter Donahue, Immigration Partnership Council Chair. “The generous donations of local residents continue to support programs that ensure our Syrian neighbours have the supports they need.”

Community donations up to $400,000 are being matched through The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation. The Cambridge & North Dumfries Community Foundation has also been collecting donations.

The Immigration Partnership Fund for Syrian Newcomers continues to accept applications for support from agencies and private sponsors on a rolling basis. The next deadline is September 7, 2016.

Since November 2015, more than 29,970 Syrian refugees have arrived in Canada. Over 1,275 have settled in Waterloo Region.
